Melissa had her first pregnancy ultrasound yesterday evening. It showed a small "possible" sac in the uterus, no yolk sac yet. She is only 5 weeks and 3 days so we would not expect to see much more. Let's keep our fingers crossed and repeat a scan next week. By that time we must see more. The growth is what is important at this point.
Melissa, keep doing the same medications. Can you go in next Wednesday for a follow up scan?

We would not expect to see a fetal pole yet. First we see a "sac". Then about a week later we see a "yolk sac" within the sac and we may see a fetal pole. Finally we see a heart beat at about 6-7 weeks.

Melissa called my office in distress because she had an episode of significant bleeding and cramping. She is doing everything correctly. I calmed her down and told her there is nothing she should be doing differently. There is no reason to go to the ER right now because they will not be able to change anything, her HCG will not tell us much right now and an ultrasound done in the ER won't either. She was comfortable checking in with me in a few hours and we will go from there. She has my cell phone number and uses it appropriately. We will most likely repeat an ultrasound tomorrow. I will keep you posted. Keep your fingers crossed.

Thank you Anne for the input. I think this is pretty critical time since one of the IPs has to go to ER since she received no support with another clinic. We are glad Melissa has you there to help her and comfort her.

It is with great sadness that I am telling you that Melissa Westgate is miscarrying. She has been bleeding heavily for the past 24 hours. I checked her hCG level this morning and it is dropping. Melissa has done everything in her power to protect this pregnancy and has diligently listened to all of my instructions. Her and I are very sad about the outcome of this pregnancy and want to express our condolences to the IP's. As to why this occurred we will never know for certain. Typically early miscarriages are due to an embryo abnormality more often than a uterine abnormality. This does not mean that Melissa is at high-risk of it happening again should she conceive again. Melissa will have an ultrasound tomorrow morning to see if anything remains in her uterus and I will continue to follow her hCG levels until they reach zero once again. We can talk about a further management plan as soon as we see how this resolves. Again, I know how difficult this is and I am available for questions any time you need me.

Dear Anne, you did best as well as surrogate lady Melissa. We are sad as well. It is about 21 days from the day of embryo transfer. We will let IP know. There are still more embryos there for which we wish IP would like to continue with Melissa for the new cycle . Thank you Anne for your timely report to us.
